The three fabric options, plain language
100% cotton
Natural fibre. Soft against the skin. Breathable in heat. Absorbs sweat. Holds embroidery and screen print cleanly. Wrinkles after washing. Shrinks slightly the first wash if not pre-shrunk. Holds colour reasonably well in commercial laundry.
Where it wins: front-of-house staff in air-conditioned spaces, premium brand experience, hot-climate hospitality where breathability matters more than wrinkle-resistance, streetwear and clothing-brand drops where the natural-fibre feel is part of the product.
Where it loses: high-volume industrial laundry programmes, kitchens with heavy splashes (cotton stains and holds odour more readily), construction sites where wrinkle and crease resistance matters, brands that need uniforms to look fresh after 100 wash cycles.
Typical GSM range for staff uniforms: 140 to 320 GSM depending on garment.
100% polyester
Synthetic fibre. Sheds liquid, resists stains, dries fast, holds colour through industrial laundering, does not wrinkle, does not shrink. Less breathable than cotton in heat. Can hold odour over time if not properly washed. Less premium hand-feel.
Where it wins: high-volume industrial laundry, performance and athletic wear, outdoor work in light rain, situations where the uniform must look identical after 200 wash cycles.
Where it loses: hot indoor kitchens (poor breathability), premium hospitality where the fabric feel is part of guest perception, anywhere staff complain about feeling sticky.
Typical GSM range: 130 to 220 GSM for performance polos and tees, higher weights are rare.
Poly-cotton blends (typically 65/35 or 80/20 polyester to cotton)
The compromise that wins most B2B uniform programmes. Combines polyester's durability and quick-dry properties with cotton's breathability and comfort. Holds shape better than cotton. Resists stains better than cotton. Breathes better than pure polyester. Holds embroidery and print cleanly.
Where it wins: most B2B uniform applications. Restaurant kitchens, hotel housekeeping, retail floors, construction sites, corporate teams. The default for any uniform programme that needs to survive industrial washing without sacrificing too much comfort.
Where it loses: high-end hospitality brand experiences where guests expect to feel cotton, and premium clothing brands where natural fibre is part of the marketing.
Typical GSM range: 180 to 280 GSM for tops, higher for bottoms.
Fabric weight (GSM) explained
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how heavy the fabric is.
A rough scale for tops:
- 130 to 150 GSM: lightweight. Promotional tees, summer event giveaways, ultra-breathable wear in tropical climates. Not durable for daily uniform use.
- 160 to 180 GSM: standard light. Casual brand tees, summer hospitality polos, light activewear. Survives a season of weekly wash.
- 200 to 240 GSM: standard mid-weight. The most ordered weight for B2B uniforms. Balances comfort, durability, and embroidery quality. Year-round wearable in most climates.
- 250 to 280 GSM: premium. Streetwear tees, premium polos, hospitality front-desk uniforms where the garment needs to hold structure all shift.
- 300 GSM and above: heavyweight. Hoodies, sweatshirts, premium streetwear drops, cold-climate uniforms.
For chef jackets, aprons, hoodies, and sweatpants the GSM ranges are higher because the garments themselves are heavier. A 300 GSM hoodie is "standard"; a 380 GSM hoodie is "premium heavyweight".

Front-of-house polos: 220 to 240 GSM cotton or 65/35 poly-cotton. Cotton if the dining room is air-conditioned and you want premium feel. Poly-cotton if the kitchen vents drift into the dining room (poly-cotton sheds the resulting grease better).

Barber shops, salons, beauty
Aprons and capes: 200 to 240 GSM poly-cotton or polyester. Poly-cotton sheds hair clippings better than cotton.
Polos and tees: 220 to 240 GSM 65/35 poly-cotton. Daily wear, often washed by staff at home, needs to look fresh on a Friday after a Monday-to-Thursday wash cycle.
Specialty: salon staff often appreciate slightly heavier polos (240 GSM) because they sit longer and need the structured collar to hold shape.

Tee drops: 220 GSM 100% cotton for standard everyday lines, 280 to 320 GSM 100% cotton for premium drops. The "heavyweight tee" trend (280 to 320 GSM) is a meaningful price-tier signal in retail.
Hoodies: 280 to 380 GSM cotton fleece. The 380 GSM tier is the "luxury heavyweight" that premium streetwear brands use for limited drops.

Common mistakes to avoid
Three mistakes most operators make in fabric selection.
Mistake 1: ordering 150 GSM tees for daily uniform use
A 150 GSM tee feels great in your hand at the supplier showroom. After 30 industrial wash cycles it pills, fades, and loses shape. Avoid 150 GSM and below for any garment that goes through commercial laundry weekly. Step up to 200 GSM minimum for daily uniforms.
Mistake 2: ordering 100% cotton for high-volume industrial laundry kitchens
A 100% cotton chef jacket in a 300-cover-per-night kitchen will stain heavily and lose shape within 50 washes. Specify poly-cotton blend (65/35) for any kitchen running daily commercial laundry. Save the cotton chef jackets for the executive chef and showcase staff who get a personal jacket.
Mistake 3: ordering polyester polos for hot-climate front-of-house
Polyester does not breathe. Front-of-house staff in a hot-climate restaurant will sweat through a polyester polo by the third hour. Specify 220 GSM cotton or 65/35 cotton-majority blend for any hot-climate or outdoor-adjacent front-of-house team.
How to test fabric quality before you commit to bulk
A short procedure for any fabric sample you receive:
Weigh it. Use a kitchen scale and a ruler. Cut a 10cm by 10cm square from a hidden seam allowance, weigh it, multiply by 100 to get the GSM. Compare to the supplier's quoted GSM. Should be within plus or minus 5 percent.
Wash test it. Run the sample through a hot wash and tumble dry. Measure shrinkage, check colour fastness, look for piling. The first wash exposes most cheap fabrics.
Pull test seams. Grasp a seam with both hands and pull firmly. Should not gap or pop.
Pattern test embroidery or print. Wash three times in hot water. Print should not crack or fade significantly. Embroidery should not loosen.
Compare to a reference. Buy a similar garment from a local supplier you trust, lay them side by side, feel the difference. Sometimes the obvious answer is "the local supplier is heavier and softer than the catalogue option".
